What's different now
Meeting someone online is now a completely normal way to start a relationship.
If you last dated before smartphones, it can feel like a different world. The good news is that the basics haven't changed: you're still looking for someone you get on with. Online dating just gives you more people to choose from, and a way to chat before you meet.
How it works
Most dating sites follow the same simple steps.
- Create your profile. Add a few photos and a short description of you and what you're looking for.
- Browse and search. Look through members who match what you're after, such as their age and where they live.
- Get chatting. Show interest in or message anyone who catches your eye.
- Meet when you're ready. There's no rush. Many people chat for a while first.
A few new words you might hear
You don't need to know them, but they help.
- Match: someone you've both shown an interest in.
- Ghosting: when someone stops replying without any explanation.
- Catfishing: when someone pretends to be someone they're not, using fake photos or details.
- Situationship: something that feels like a relationship but has never been defined as one.
Getting started with confidence
- Use recent photos. Clear, smiling and taken in the last year or so.
- Be honest about being divorced. A short, positive line is enough. Read how and when to talk about your divorce for more.
- Write a little about your life now. Your hobbies, what a good weekend looks like, and what you're hoping to find.
- Don't worry about getting it perfect. You can change your profile at any time.
Stay safe from the start. Keep conversations on the site until you know someone, never send money to anyone you've met online, and meet somewhere public for the first few dates. Our guide is online dating safe? covers more.
